"The State” is a mixed media installation presenting a visual assessment of the Colorado landscape. It consists of nine rolled-up landscape paintings, in pillar form, and bases. Each of these forms corresponds to a specific time and site in the state of Colorado. Also included are supporting documents in the form of a painted map indicating the sites visited, and an informational field guide supplied for visitors to the installation. “The State” challenges current and traditional modes of framing landscapes which place the viewer outside the picture plane, by instead setting up a format that imaginatively transports viewers, by means of felt absence due to elements of figuration, to the inside of each painting for a complete, in-the-round, landscape experience.
